Principal's Message from RMS
Just a few notes of interest for this week:
1. Barnes and Noble will be offering a special 20% discount for purchase of books on our summer reading list. The flyer with more detailed information is attached.
2. In our April newsletter we mistakenly forgot to mention that two of our students (Ben Richardson and Kevin Raschke) finished 4th in the IMSA Middle School math competition. This is a very difficult and challenging event. Congratulations to both of these students!!
3. ....and just as a reminder, J.B. Nelson is conducting a used band instrument sale this Saturday from 9:00 am - Noon. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase 'lightly used' instruments that could serve well for many more years.

Prinicpal's Message from RMS
1. This week is "Bulldogs Don't Bully Week" at RMS. This is a real opportunity for us to address some very important issues in our students' lives. As adults we understand that bullying takes many forms including racial slurs, religious put-downs, and sexually derogatory comments, as well as physically and verbally aggressive behaviors. We must teach our children that these behaviors ARE bullying behaviors, that they are breaking school discipline code, and in some cases, that they are illegal and a violation of students' civil rights. If we are going to address these with detentions and referrals, we must clearly spell out for adolescents that these behaviors ARE bullying behaviors.
Attached you will find a copy of an "Anti-Bullying Pledge" that students have the opportunity to sign during their lunch period this week. A table will be set up with copies of the pledge, along with a large banner for them to sign. They will also receive upon signing, a red gel bracelet that says, "Bulldog Pride."
We want you to know that every student at RMS will been informed of this attached pledge. Please take the opportunity during the week to discuss these behaviors with your child. Often adolescents view these behaviors at "just kidding or teasing" and don't realize the significant nature of the issue.
2. Congratulations to all students (and parents) who participated in the Science Olympiad. This was our first participation in this competition. We did very well, with several students receiving high honors. The time and effort put into this academic co-curricular activity was amazing. All involved did RMS proud!!!!!
3. Batavia High School is displaying its talent once again in the drama production of "The Crucible". Based on the Salem Witch Trials, this story takes place in 1692 outside the city of Salem, Massachusetts. A group of young girls are accused of witchcraft and the town of Salem is dealing with paranoia and political manipulation because of this. Most of the town is wrapped up in a quest for revenge and self-preservation. Performances are Friday, April 25th, and Saturday, April 26th, at 7:30 PM. Beginning today, Monday, April 14th tickets are available in the BHS Atrium from 11am-1pm when school is in session .
A ticket order form that can be mailed is also available in the BHS main office and also by calling the ticket hotline at: 1-630-878-4600 extension: 6840.
DISCLAIMER: This play may not be suitable for younger children. Parental guidance is suggested.

1. The new phone system for RMS goes into effect tomorrow, Friday April 11th. Important numbers are as follows:
Main Office 630-937-8700
Attendance Line 630-937-8703
FAX 630-937-8701.
Teachers will now have voicemail to receive your messages. Students were given refrigerator magnets to take home today. Extras are available in the main office. I'm sure we will experience "bugs" in the system as well as experience our own "learning curve." Please bear with us while we learn and troubleshoot the new system.
2. The Spring Book Fair begins tomorrow. A special Learning Center Flyer with additional information regarding this week long event is attached.
3. Joe Dalsanto, an Astronomy Professor from Waubonsee Community College will be presenting to our sixth graders Friday, April 11th, from 1:30 - 2:30 in the cafeteria. His focus will be "Careers in Astronomy Today" with strong curricular connections to our solar system and scientific information gathering methods. He will also be discussing other solar and star systems similar to ours. Parents are welcome to attend.
4. To parents of 8th grade students:
Please read the attached letter about the Illinois Youth Survey that our 8th grade students will take later this month. The anonymous survey accesses several aspects about middle schoolers lives. This is a State-wide survey of which we have been chosen to participate. The results provide the State with information regarding teen habits including homework, television, use of illegal substances, time spent reading, school and community safety, nutrition and fitness. The survey will take no more than one advisory period. You have the right to exclude your son or daughter from taking the survey if you so wish. The letter is a passive permission slip with a portion at the bottom to return to school if you want your student excluded from this survey. If you have questions, please call Dr. Weimer at RMS. There is a copy of the survey on display in the Main Office for your viewing.
5. Our spring Bulldog Bounce for sixth and seventh graders is coming up on Friday, April 25th, from 3-5 p.m. Parent volunteers are needed for this event. Please contact morgan.connell@bps101.net or kimberly.oswald@bps101.net if you are interested in volunteering from 2:30 - 5:00 p.m. on the day of the Bounce.
6. Take your child to work day is April 24th. We respect your wish to participate in this event and use it for the potentially valuable learning opportunity it is. Parents planning on participating need to make our main office aware of your plans by Monday, April 21st. You can do this by informing us on the school attendance line, or by providing a note to the office. If you are planning on picking you child up after the start of the school day, you should follow the same procedures as for picking your child up for an appointment. Understand that this is not a school sponsored event. Absent students, where notification is not given ahead of time are marked unexcused and in essence are truant. Please form us of your intentions prior to April 21st.
7. Our 8th grade counselor, Julie Webb, recently had an unexpected surgery. She is doing well and will be taking a few weeks to recover. We hope that she will return to RMS for the last few weeks of school. In the meantime, there are several Student Services Staff who are meeting with 8th graders and are available for answering parents questions.

Principal's Message from RMS
Quite the week this has been! I want to thank everyone for your support, kind words, and heartfelt concerns given toward the RMS staff and myself. Your overwhelming positive comments helped us all get through this week. Today we did 'school' with 49% of our students in attendance. Given the circumstances, this was outstanding....and believe me, I also am very understanding of all who chose to keep their children home. These were difficult circumstances. Homework is available on our school web site under 'Principal's Message' and is also listed on individual team sites. Continued security measures are posted on the district web site. Students should expect continued entry searches and additional police presence around school. As of now we plan on allowing students to resume the option of going outside during lunch time, along with the resumption of before and after school student activities.
General Upcoming announcements:
1. Sodexho, our food service provider, is piloting a breakfast option. Limited to morning 6th graders, the
abbreviated breakfast menu is as follows: whole fruit ($.40), juice and milk ($.45), Izze juice ($1.75), bagel
($.75), whole grain pop tart, muffins ($ 1.00), hash brown patty ($.50) cinnamon pastries ($.75).
Monday: English Muffin, Egg and Cheese ($1.00 w/ sausage $1.50)
Tuesday: Pizza Breakfast Stick ($1.00)
Wednesday: Breakfast Burrito ($1.00)
Thursday: Breakfast Sandwich ($1.00 w/ sausage $1.50)
Friday: Breakfast Pizza ($1.00)
2. Attached is parent information on school bullying. "Bulldogs Don't Bully" Week is coming April 21st - 25th.
3. Don't forget the Sports Booster Dinner and Silent Auction on April 11th. This wonderful group supports not only high school athletics but also athletics at the middle school. We can't do the things we do without their support. Please go to www.bataviabulldogboosters.org for more information.
4. The new RMS phone system roll out is scheduled for April 11th. We will send out all those new numbers on Thursday, April 10th. Your child should come home with a refrigerator magnet on the same day.

I would like to take the time to thank everyone for all your concern and support regarding the threat directed towards Rotolo Middle School and our heightened security measures that followed. First, let me say that everything has gone exceptionally smoothly today. Morning entry was flawless as were passing periods and lunch times. It was obvious that many of you had spoken to your children and that you took measures regarding leaving back-packs at home. Putting school materials in clear plastic bags helped greatly. Most of the questions we are receiving about this matter have to do with details about the threat. At this time we can tell you that the threat did not identify any student or person, nor ethnic or religious group. It was not a bomb or chemical threat, but simply stated "April 4th when I shoot school." There were some other vulgarities associated with this writing. At this time, we continue to follow up with information being provided by parents and our students.
We intend to have regular school on Friday. Teachers are planning regular activities and routines for the day. It is our intention to have Friday NOT be a wasted day, rather a regular day of learning. I share this with you because there is some hallway talk about Friday being a wasted day. Again, that is not our intent. Student safety and their education are our greatest concern.

Message from RMS
Just prior to Spring Break, Rotolo Middle School located threatening graffiti on a bathroom stall. The graffiti indicated possible violence on Friday, April 4th. All threats of aggression to our students or staff are taken seriously. There is no exception for student and staff safety. Rotolo Middle School administrators, Batavia Police Liaison, and counselors have investigated the threat over Spring Break. A safety plan has been developed to ensure the safety of students and staff at Rotolo Middle School. We want to share with you the major parts of the safety plan. However, we do keep some portions of our safety plan confidential to better protect students and staff. Some of the safety measures and timelines are provided below:
· Students are encouraged not to use back-packs this week. All backpacks, purses, and bags will be searched Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Students will be selected at random for hand-held metal detectors searches.
· Band instruments may only enter through the Band Room doors. Band staff will search instrument cases. Students are recommended not to remove instruments from the building this week.
· All after school student activities are canceled on Wednesday and Thursday evening. Rotolo Middle School will be locked and secured immediately following dismissal. No student re-entry will be allowed. This includes RMS activities as well as outside programs that use RMS.
· Student movement will be limited to passing periods only on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. There will be no unsupervised trips to lockers or bathrooms. Students will be provided an adult escort in emergency situations.
· Supervised locker cleaning and checks will be conducted throughout the day on Wednesday.
· The Batavia Police Department will increase staffing the remainder of the week. A combination of uniform and plain clothes police officers will patrol the interior and exterior of the RMS campus.
· Student advisory activities this week will emphasis building safety procedures.
We know that school safety is on everyone’s mind these days. Counselors will be available to meet with students who may be anxious about these procedures. In addition, students who may have information regarding this threat should contact any of the following:
1. Mr. Maciejewski, Principal
2. Mr. Anderson, Assistant Principal
3. Dr. Weimer, Assistant Principal
4. Officer Rhonda Komes, Police Liaison Officer
5. Ms. Julie Webb, 8th Grade Counselor
6. Ms. Sue Arch, 7th Grade Counselor
7. Ms. Julie Neece, 6th Grade Counselor
8. Advisory teacher or
9. Any classroom teacher or staff
While we are confident that the appropriate safety plans are in place, parents/guardians may feel compelled to keep their student home on Friday. Please call the RMS attendance line if your student will be absent on Friday (630-879-4671). Parents who have questions are encouraged to contact Principal Stephen Maciejewski, 630-879-4625 or email: Stephen.maciejewski@bps101.net

Principal's Message from RMS
1. Rocket balloons, singing stemware, laser demos..??? Liquid nitrogen, why airplanes fly and the VanDerGraff generator..??? These wonderful scientific examples were demonstrated to our 6th graders by Northern Illinois University Scientist Pati Sievertthis afternoon. This was an excellent event. Ask your 6th grader about it!
2. Thank you to Target for their "Take Charge of Education" program. We recently received a donation from them of $1,024 that will go directly to student programming and materials....and THANKS to all of you who participate in this program by designating RMS as your Target REDcard school.
3. Come grow with us!! Have you heard that RMS is in the middle of a 5 year student participation/co-curricular growth plan? Part of this is the addition of volleyball teams for next school year. We are looking for 6 additional coaches. 2 additional coaches to work with our current teams in 7th and 8th grade, and 4 coaches (2 for each team) to work with the new 7th and 8th grade teams. If you are interested in applying for these positions please contact Mr. Anderson, Assistant Principal for Student Services at RMS.
4. Many parents recently received a letter regarding the possibility of some students being recommended for summer school. An honest error was made regarding student data and "cut" scores for this program. As a result, many families received letters that were not necessary, for this we apologize. We are in the process of correcting this error. At this time if you received such a letter you should disregard it. We will send out new, corrected letters at the beginning of next week.
5. TO PARENTS OF EIGHTH GRADERS: Cell phones continue to be a great distraction. While students are allowed to have cell phones in school they should be in, and remain in, student lockers during the school day. Cell phone use is not allowed during the regular school day. Students may use them to make parent contact after school. Students have been continually reminded by their teachers regarding these expectations. At this time, students who can not manage their phones will have them confiscated and turned over to a building administrator. We will then contact the student's parents and turn the phone over only to the parent.
6. Friday, March 21st is a Teacher Work Day. There is no school for students.
7. 7th and 8th graders have begun to sign-up for track. Practice starts the week of the 31st (immediately after Spring Break). This is an outstanding sport opportunity for a huge variety of students. Traditionally there have been 180-200 students participating in track. A large selection of running and field events allow for students to find their interest and participate. Interested students should sign-up with their P.E. teacher.

Principal's Message from RMS
1. I know the weather has been cold and in general not very pleasant. I also understand the need to drive students to school, but we need to make efforts to leave earlier and arrive on time. This week we regularly had 60+ students tardy to first hour class because of morning traffic. Please consider dropping in other locations and allowing your child(ren) to walk a reasonable distance to school. A favorite alternative is the subdivision on the east side of Raddant across from the school. Another is on Norcross which is just to the North of the bike path. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal to be a few minutes late, but this causes a constant stream of class interruptions. Thank you for your efforts and understanding.
2. Do you know families or have neighbors with students in 5th grade who will be entering Rotolo next year? Please share with them that this weekly message is posted on the RMS web site and can be viewed by clicking on "Principal's Message." For those 5th grade parents reading this, there are two dates to remember:
A) Wednesday, February 27th, beginning at 7:00 PM there will be an informational meeting
for parents of incoming Special Educationstudents
and
B) Monday, May 5th, beginning at 6:30 PM there will be an informational meeting for parents
of all incoming 6th graders. There will be additional notice provided through your
elementary building at a later date.
3. Our Ecology Club is recycling used tennis shoes. There are a variety of "boxes" in our halls identified for this purpose. Please have your children bring them in.
4. The Batavia Parent Academy invites parents and community members to "Birth Order: Understanding Your Family Constellation" presented by Dr. Maniacci on March 6th at 7:00 PM at the High School. A flier is attached.
5. Looking for some extra cash? Lunch room supervisors are still needed at RMS from 10:30 - 1:00 @ $10.00 per hour. What better way is there to pick up a few extra dollars? For more information or to schedule an interview please contact Dr. Weimer at 630-879-4620.

Principal's Message from RMS
There is a multitude of informational items for this week's message. Here we go....
1. Tomorrow, Friday, February 15th is a 1/2 day for students. RMS dismissal time is 11:00 A.M. The afternoon is reserved for parent-teacher conferences.
2. While cell phones are allowed in school, they should be in student lockers and not used during regular school hours. A growing issue has to do with students 'texting' during class time to others around the building. This is obviously not helpful or beneficial to the learning environment. Texts often originate from the bathroom or locker room and are sent to students in class. Please reinforce at home that students should not be doing this. Perhaps a check of phone bills might indicate not only the frequency of texts but also the times? Some services provide this information while others do not. This is a growing concern. Thanks for any help you can provide.
3. The BATTLE OF THE BOOKS FINALE will be held in the LMC Tuesday, March 4th, from 6-7 P.M. The final 4 team will battle it out for the trophy! Family and friends are encouraged to attend.
4. We have scheduled a parent meeting for parents of 5th grade special education students (incoming 6th graders) for February 27th here at RMS in room 103.
5. The new official last day of school is June 6th provided there are no additional snow days.
6. The High School musical, "The Pajama Game", has scheduled performances for February 28, 29 and March 1st at 7:30 P.M. and also on March 2 @ 2:00 P.M. All tickets are $6.00. For more ticket information call Beth Suehr at the Ticket Hotline at 1-630-879-4600 Ext. 6840.
7. The district is in need of Paraprofessional substitutes. The attachment below provides additional information.
8. As part of RMS February Wellness month, we are organizing a "Healthy Food Drive" for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. Additional information and a list of healthy food items is attached.
9. The end of the trimester is Friday, February 28th. You should expect report cards brought home by your student on Thursday, March 6th. Parents of 6th graders should look for an exploratory class selection/information sheet for 7th grade. This should be returned to the school as indicated on that sheet.
10. On Tuesday, February 26th, from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M. the 3rd Annual Educational Resource Fair: Beyond the Classroom will be held at RMS. More information is include in the attachment.
11. When dropping students off in the morning please drop curbside, but not necessarily in front of the main door. Waiting to drop you child off as close to the door as possible slows down the process. In the afternoon, while waiting along the access road off of Raddant Road, please be sure to move your vehicle as far right as possible to allow buses to enter and exit the area. At this time of the day we still have some route buses entering from Raddant Road, along with scheduled events entering and leaving the area. If we can't get in or out then everything is delayed. Thanks for your understanding.
12. The Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence funds a multitude of new and innovative teacher projects. They are in the middle of their 20/20 drive....raise $20,000 this year by getting $20 contributions. This is an incredibly supportive organization for the school district. A great website ( www.bataviafoundation.org ) provides a wealth of Foundation information along with methods to contribute. Please consider supporting this group.
13. We will be providing a healthy snack for students each morning during the ISAT testing week. ISAT's begin Monday, March 3rd. We simply ask that students bring $2.00 to help cover the cost of these snacks and turn it in to their advisory teacher by Monday, February 25th.

Principal's Message from RMS
Did everyone enjoy the snow day today? I'm sure your children did! Here are some notes for this week.
1. February is Wellness Month at Rotolo!! Since your child's health - physical, social, and mental - is so important to us, students will be learning more about health/wellness in several of ways. A variety of advisory activities, morning announcements, and the Exploratory Department's "Healthy Foods Drive" are just a few things we will be doing to place extra emphasis on healthy decisions and behaviors. We are excited about this new opportunity and appreciate your continued support in our efforts. To read more about RMS and health/wellness efforts go to the Association of Illinois Middle Schools web site at www.AIMS.UIUC.edu and click on the link "one school's effort."
2. I am sure all are aware of the great concern voiced over the selling of soda/pop products in public schools. A greater concern in my opinion is the use of "energy drinks" by our students. I see our middle school students, on a regular basis drinking energy products such as Monster, Red Bull, and AMP. These are not products students can purchase at school. These products are LOADED with caffeine, sugar, and in many cases a variety of herbal products. Now what middle school student needs an energy drink? Certainly, healthy children need no "energy boost." Students of this age are naturally active and full of energy. Their active nature and attention span have even shaped middle school teaching practices. Ever been around a group of middle schoolers? You will quickly notice that the last thing they need is an energy boost. If your child is interested in these energy drinks, please take the time to review the ingredients with them and discuss healthy alternatives.
3. A request was made for me to include the 24-hour fever free policy I sent out last week in a Spanish version. It is attached.
4. There is also an attachment regarding Batavia's new Early Childhood Center. The attachment addresses volunteer fund-raising needs. All help is appreciated.
1-25-08
Principal's Message from RMS
1. Keeping the spread of communicable diseases to a minimum is one of the ways we ensure safety. We are continuing to emphasize with students the importance of maintaining healthy hygiene. Frequent hand washing is one way to do this. In our cafeteria we have created a "hand washing station." This area is stocked with anti-bacterial hand cleaner for student use.
We are also implementing a new district policy effective immediately to further address health issues. We ask for your cooperation in complying with the attached BOE policy regarding children attending school only when fever-free without medication being given in the previous 24 hours. Also, your child mustbe kept home if displaying any of the other symptoms listed on the policy.
If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Marilyn Kanwischer, District Certified Nurse, at (630) 879-4600 x5883.
2. I would like to congratulate the following Robotics Teams who competed at the State Tournament this past weekend: Kudos to "Team Happy Face'', "The Caffeinated Squirrels" and "The Angry Llama Herd". "Team Happy Face" was a finalist in five categories; "The Caffeinated Squirrels" won the Innovative Design Award. This is an outstanding learning opportunity for our students. Congratulations to all!!
.....Also congratulations are in order to our building's spelling bee winner, Alexandra Nelson!! Good Luck in your future competitions.
3. Please do not double park when picking up students. This makes it impossible for busses departing toward Raddant Road to exit, thereby actually slowing down the entire process. Please pick-up and drop-off children curbside, only.
4. Baby it's cold outside! Are your students dressed appropriately? Remember, it's not so cool to be a middle school student and not dress for the weather. However, we constantly see students with nothing more than a hoody....sometimes even in shorts, despite the temperature. Please 'remind' them to dress well for the weather.
What about recess in the cold? When the wind chill temperature is zero or below, students do not go outside for recess. We also will not allow students outside if they don't have appropriate jackets on. Let's hope the remainder of the season provides us with more mild, winter weather.
5. Please excuse our goof - - - in the Parent Newsletter sent out last week we listed the wrong date for February's half day of school attendance. The day is definitely Friday, but the date is February 15th, not the 13th. Thank you to everyone who caught our error!
6. How are we doing?? Please do not hesitate to E-Mail me ( Stephen.Maciejewski@bps101.net) about your thoughts or concerns. Improvement is a constant effort.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Principal's Message from RMS
Welcome back after a very nice break. I regularly receive information about community and school district happenings and events. I will continue to share them with you in with the hope you find them helpful.
1. We have the honor of having a visiting teacher from the AFS program in our building. Hongyan Sheng is from China and teaches English at a private boarding school in her home country. Ms. Rios, a 6th grade teacher at RMS, is her mentor teacher, and the family of Ms. Carey, our ELL teacher, is her host family while she is in our country. What a wonderful experience and opportunity this is for all involved. Ms. Sheng is here to learn about our practices (especially those related to middle school students) as well as our culture. In return, she will be sharing her culture with many of our students.
2. Hoover-Wood Elementary School will hold their annual Fun-Fair on Friday, February 29th. They are in need of volunteers. Please see the the "Carnival Game" attachment if you are interested and available to volunteer.
3. Our next RMS Parent Advisory Committee meeting is Wednesday, January 16th, at 6:30 PM in the Middle School Learning Center. All are invited.
4. 8th grade high school orientation is Monday, January 14th, beginning at 7:00 P.M. at the high school. Parents and students are strongly encouraged to attend together.

6. GOT BUS PASS?? Students who forget their bus pass/ID may get a temporary pass at the table in front of the cafeteria at the end of the school day. They may only secure a pass to ride their assigned route. Students are allowed 3 temporary passes each year. Permanent replacement bus passes can be purchased for $2.00 in the Student Services Office. Parent requests for their student to ride other routes for some 'special occasion' need to be made in writing. These notes need to be presented to the Student Services Office for an approval signature. This special permission is on a space available basis only.
7. The attachment titled "Explore Parent Letter" provides information for parents of 8th graders regarding the Explore Test. This will be administered to 8th graders January on 23rd and 24th.

1. Attached is a flyer regarding the upcoming middle school talent shows. For the first time, there will be a 6th grade only performance. The 6th grade performance is scheduled for Thursday evening, February 7th, 2008 @ 7:00 p.m. The 7th and 8th grade show is on Friday evening, February 8th, 2008 also at 7:00 p.m. Audition information is included in the attachment.
2. While this season can be very exciting for students, normal and regular structure helps with the routine of the day. Structure at home helps greatly with school routine, behavior, and performance. A regular bed time, routine homework times and reasonable household chores, all help with adolescent structure. Remember our middle school students are at the age of pushing limits. We need to be limit setters and still allow for added responsibility. At school, even though winter break is within our sights, we will be continuing with our 'routines' to make the week as successful as we can.
3. Attached is a flyer regarding the district's early childhood program, with a volunteer opportunity, as well as the next committee meeting date.

There are several exciting things happening with our students this weekend. These are described below:
1. The Regional LEGO Robotics Competition will be held Sunday, December 9th at Rotolo. This is amazing to see. Students build LEGO robots that do a variety of tasks. From concept, to design, programming and trouble shooting, the work students have done on their project is unbelievable. The public is invited to attend on Sunday, December 9th from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
2. This evening downtown Batavia is a canvas for the fine arts. There are several Middle School groups performing in a variety of locations. The details of this were sent to all yesterday but a schedule of locations and groups can be found at www.downtownbatavia.com. Sounds like and enjoyable evening.
3. We're looking for feedback regarding parent-teacher conferences this year. A brief parent survey is attached. Please return these to the Middle School office by Monday, December 14th.
4. The music department is extremely excited to present the first RMS Band Podcast! You can access it on the band website.
Download it to your MP3 player or listen to it on our website. Check back every month for a new episode. Stay tuned for more!
5. As a reminder, High School Registration night is Monday, January 14th beginning at 7:00 P.M. in the high school main gymnasium. BHS counselors will visit each 8th grade team to discuss options for the freshman year during that day on the 14th. This same information will be presented to you that evening. If you need to attend the day session at RMS on the 14th, please call the 8th grade counselor, Ms. Julie Webb ahead of time. Space during the day is extremely limited (obviously, because we have your students all here).

Principal's Message from RMS
1. Wow...Even though last week was short it certainly was jam-packed with activities. Your children should be commended for all the hard work they do, not only academically but also with co-curricular activities. Athletics, student clubs, chorus, and band students all represent Rotolo extremely well.
2. I hope all conferences went well and provided valuable information. When questions or problems arise, contact your child's advisory teacher for information on additional conferences.
3. Did you walk like an Egyptian last week? 6th graders provided excellent information with their Egyptian projects. We were all impressed with the effort and time put into making this successful.
4. The More Cowbell Players are putting the finishing touches on the RMS Fall Play, Truckstop Chili. You're gonna have to see it to believe it! Don't miss this one - it's fun for the whole family!! The play is Friday, November 16th and Saturday, November 17th at 7:00 P.M. both nights. No advanced tickets are necessary, just show up and pay at the door - $3 for adults, $2 for student/seniors. Students need to be in attendance with a parent.
5. It's Battle of the Books time again. The titles have been revealed!! Registration has started!! The Battle of the Books encourages quality reading and teamwork. Students develop a team of 3-4 students and begin reading the 12 selected titles. Beginning January 14th, teams will compete by answering trivia questions on the selected titles. Winning teams keep competing for the Final Tournament in February. Registration forms are available in the LMC until Nov.16th. Single students can sign up and can be put on a team. Selected titles can be found on the LMC website and are also posted outside the LMC. Encourage your child to join the Battle!! Any questions should be directed to Mrs. Cook in the LMC.
6. Please see the attachment regarding the upcoming book fair.

Principal's Message from RMS
1. What outstanding musical concerts this past week! One of the GREAT joys of working in a school is seeing and hearing 'learning' on a daily basis. The effort our students give in our exploratory classes is unbelievable. Hearing music in the halls of our school is one of the many daily pleasures.
2. You are invited to the Second Annual Egyptology Museum. This is provided by the 6th graders in our cafeteria on Tuesday, November 6th from 6:30-7:30PM. Come see over 200 amazing interactive displays of ancient Egypt.
3. When dropping students off in the morning, please drop them curbside. We are concerned about students crossing multiple lanes of entry traffic before they get to the sidewalk.
4. I've had difficulty with my voicemail for the past couple of weeks. I apologize for not returning messages you may have left. We think we have the issue resolved.
5. Do you know a school board member? Tell them 'thanks' for actively taking part in our schools. They spent time today touring our district facilities, stopped in several classes, and they ate lunch in our cafeteria. I think secretly they wanted to go out to recess with the 6th graders. It was a pleasure having them in our building. The students really enjoyed having them here.
6. Any rumors you may have heard about a MRSA case at RMS are false. Please encourage extra hand washing and general good hygiene. We continue to take extra care in our daily building cleaning. Our PE teachers are encouraging students to take gym uniforms home to be washed. The district web site - www.bps101.net - continues to post information related to MRSA.
7. We hired the new 8th grade guidance counselor. Ms. Julie Webb is currently employed in another district but will be joining us within the month. She spent the day today with us getting a feel for the 'lay of the land'. We expect her here full time beginning November 26th.
10-25-07
Principal's Message from RMS
1. Please be aware that we have taken extra safety precautions with regards to the MRSA virus. More information regarding these actions is posted on the district web site @ www.bps101.net.
2. While Friday, October 26th is a non-attendance for students, teachers will be here working. Even though you may see cars in the parking lot, the building is closed to the public. The office will be closed and no calls will be answered other than by the answering machine.
3. Parents of students in Special Education are invited to an Open House on November 13, 2007 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. held at the district central office. That address is 335 W. Wilson Street in Batavia. Questions can be answered by Katie Johnson at 630-879-4600 extension 4014.
4. Batavia High School will be presenting the comedy "The Nerd" the evenings of November 9th and 10th beginning at 7:30. All tickets are $6.00 and can be purchased at the high school. For more information and the Ticket Hotline please contact Ms. Beth Oberfoell at 630-879-4600 extension 6840.
5. Remember parent conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 8th in the afternoon and evening. Alternate times can be arranged with your student's team during this entire week.
6. Students are encouraged NOT to have cell phones, I-pods, or other electronic devices at school. They are attractive items that are easily lost, misplaced or stolen.
7. The Rotolo student council will be running their annual food drive to support the Batavia Food Pantry. Non-perishable food items can be brought in to your child's advisory classroom from October 29th - November 2nd. Thank you for your help with this very important community service project.

Friday Principal's Message from RMS
1. As the weather gets colder and less inviting, please remember the following procedures when dropping students off at RMS:
- Pull as far forward as possible and be sure that your child has everything ready in order to quickly exit the car. 'Parking' along the yellow marked curbs is not allowed. If you need to drop off longer than just a few seconds, you should locate a parking space. Please drop your student off along the sidewalk and not in the center lane. It is never good practice to have children walking through other stopped vehicles. Drop off along the sidewalk, please.
- We encourage dropping off at other locations such as Big Woods Park, Norcross,
Davey Drive, or Edwards Drive directly across the road from RMS. Please do not drop students in the back parking lot. Twenty-two (22) school buses unload each morning and load up every afternoon, and some of those buses serve students with wheelchairs.
2. In a previous email, I indicated that parent conferences are scheduled November 8th and 9th. This is an error. Conferences will be held the afternoon and evening of Thursday, November 8th. Arrangements for an alternate conference time can be made for any time during that entire week with your child's team. We encourage you to take advantage of this time for conferences.
3. Please see the attachments regarding announcements for a Parent Academy speaker, as well as information from the BHS cheer team.
10-4-07
Friday Principal's Message from RMS
1. The first of three scheduled newsletters for the year is attached. We hope you find this informative and educational.
2. Progress reports for this trimester were sent home on Thursday, October 4th. Included with this information is your child's individual ISAT data. Your teachers will be happy to discuss this information during upcoming Parent-Teacher conferences. Contact your team and they will do their best to accommodate you. Official conference dates are the afternoon and evening of November 8th and during the morning on November 9th. Alternative conferences prior to these dates may be scheduled with your student's team. Exploratory progress reports will also be sent home for those students currently receiving a 'C' grade or lower.
3. Does you child have a broken locker? Please encourage him/her to report it to the office. We will be glad to make the necessary repair. "Sticking, stuck, or jammed" lockers should be rare. PLEASE encourage your child to be sure to lock their assigned locker. To assure it is locked they need to spin the combination dial after closing the locker. Leaving the combination 'set' on the last number is not a good idea. In essence the locker is not locked. Some students like to stick objects in the inside locking mechanism of their lockers. This also causes the locker not to lock. These are the main reasons for things stolen out of lockers. In my 16 years here, I have never seen evidence of forceful entry into a student locker. It is a rare occasion when others "learn" someone's combination. For obvious reasons students should NOT give out their combination to a "friend." On one day this week, on only one team, we discovered over 50 lockers "set" not to lock. Please discuss this issue with your child at home. We will continue discussing this with them at school.
4. With the above in mind, I-pods or other such small musical devices are not allowed at Rotolo. There is really no academically sound reason for students to have expensive electronic 'toys' at school. We also discourage cell phones. If your child has a cell phone it should be "off" and in their locker.....hopefully one that is locked. Cell phones may only be used after school.
5. We are also sending this out on through the 'messenger' information system. We are transitioning to this and will eventually stop using the current school eMail system. Messenger is used by all schools in our district. You can sign up through the district web site, www.bps101.net, going to 'tools' and clicking on 'messenger.'
Have an enjoyable and relaxing extended weekend.
Sincerely,
Steve Maciejewski

Please read the letter below from the Batavia High School principal regarding RMS student attendance at upcoming football games. Thank you!
September 21st, 2007
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Another exciting season of Batavia High School Football has begun! The football team, cheerleaders, dance team, and marching band appreciate your loyalty and support at every Friday night game at Bulldog Stadium!
Our goal is to provide an enjoyable and safe environment for fans to watch the game. With crowds that seem to grow every year, we have developed some improvements that will help achieve this goal. Beginning with the September 28th game, there will be two additions to Bulldog Stadium that you need to be aware of:
Installation of temporary bleachers at the south end of the existing home grandstands, adding seating for roughly 250 people.
A designated area near the south end zone of the stadium will be in place for elementary and middle school students who are not seated with their parents/guardians.
Please note that in order to be admitted to the stadium, students younger than high school age are to be accompanied by an adult who needs to remain at the event. Appropriate cheers, language, and conduct are expected. Students of any age who do not meet these expectations will be asked for parent notification information and required to leave.
Our goal is provide an enjoyable and safe atmosphere in which all spectators can cheer on the Bulldogs. If you have any questions please contact the high school administration at extension 4809. Thank you for your continued support of making Bulldog Stadium a special place to be!
Sincerely,
Doug Drexler

Parent Information
1) Batavia High School's homecoming is Friday, September 28th. Our band students will leave Rotolo Middle School at 12:45PM to march in the parade and will return by 2:45PM. With the exception of this performance, the rest of the middle school day is a full and complete day. We discourage our general student population from leaving the school day early. Parents only may sign out their children per our regular procedures. Students will not be allowed to call home for permission to leave early or to solicit permission to leave with a different family. This is a regular school day where complete attendance is important. As per regular procedures, students leaving early for appointments should present a note to the main office in the morning. When picking students up, parents need to report to the main office and sign out their children.
2) Rotolo Middle School students can expect a separate attendance area at home BHS football games beginning September 28th. It is our intention to supervise this area with RMS staff. Unless seated with parents, RMS students will be required to remain in this area.
3) 8th grade curriculum night is Monday, September 24th beginning at 7:30PM. Parents are to report directly to their student's team as follows:
Team 8-1 (Carlson, Stoneberg, Richard, Breon, Magic) Rooms #211-212
Team 8-2 (Thompson, Dopke, Pierce, Sutherland, Richter) Learning Center
Team 8-3 (McAlpin, Ewing, Hix, Powell) Rooms #218-219
Team 8-4 (Schumacher, Felter, Creed, Schulz) Rooms #214-215
4) The magazine fund raising drive continues through this weekend. The final turn in day is also Monday, September 24th. Ask your children for order forms. The orders can either be new subscriptions or renewals. You pay the regular subscription price and RMS receives 40% of the cost. You may also order on-line at www.QSP.com
5) All 6th grade parents are invited to a meeting on Thursday, September 27th providing an overview of the health education and human reproduction section of the 6th grade health class curriculum. The meeting is in Room #030 at 7PM and will conclude by 8PM.
6) If you were around RMS this past Thursday evening, I'm sure you were surprised with the wealth of activity. Activities included a football game, a volleyball match, the first home cross country meet, 6th grade band rehearsal, play practice, and who knows how many other clubs! WOW!! That kind of school involvement is great to see.

RMS Parent Advisory Council
Thank you for volunteering to participate in the RMS Parent Advisory Council (PAC). The purpose of this council is to solicit parental input important to the decision process of the school, to provide feedback to building staff regarding current or potential programming, and to accomplish goals set forth by the group that will enhance our school. Parents in PAC also help in obtaining volunteers, organizing staff recognition activities and participating in/working on other goals set forth by the group. I have scheduled the following dates. We can discuss times at our first meeting.
Tuesday, October 9th at 6:30PM
Tuesday, November 13th, 2007
Tuesday, December 11th, 2007
Tuesday, January 15th, 2008
Tuesday, February 12th, 2008
Tuesday, March 11th, 2008
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008
Tuesday, May 13th, 2008
Certainly these dates are tentative. We can discuss and change as necessary. Please come to our first meeting with topic ideas you might want to learn more about as we move through the school year.

Parent Information
September 14, 2007
1. While we continue to be without an assigned 8th grade guidance counselor, I want all of you to know that we are still providing counseling services. These issues are being divided between Student Service's support staff. We will continue our counselor search until the vacancy is filled. Students and parents are encouraged to bring counseling issues to the Student Service's office where they will be put in contact with appropriate staff.
2. I want to thank all of the 6th grade parents for your attendance during your scheduled curriculum night. The turnout was outstanding. I hope you now have a better sense of what your child's day is like.
3. 7th grade curriculum night is Tuesday, September 18th beginning at 7:00PM. This will begin with an exploratory department presentation in the main gym.
4. 8th grade curriculum night is Monday, September 24th at 7:30PM. This is a change from the original date. Parents should report directly to your student's academic team for this evening.
5. We encourage everyone to sign up for the District's Group Wise 'Messenger' service available on the district web site at www.bps101.net. Click on 'Tools' then go to 'Messenger'. We will transition from our current email method to this system. We have received many concerns from parents about not receiving our emails even though we have correct email addresses. Many internet providers seem to be recognizing our 'blast' emails as 'spam' and are not allowing them through. Directions for fixing these filters are posted on the RMS website, again linked with the above district site.
6. As a reminder, automotive traffic is limited to the front drive 'circle' area. There is no parking along the yellow curb. In the morning, please pull as far forward as you can and quickly drop your student(s) off. Auto traffic is not allowed in the back. This area is for the loading and departure of 22 school buses.
7. The magazine drive is going in full force. Each student has been provided with appropriate order information. You should find these prices to be the same as you would normally pay for a subscription. RMS receives 40% of the sales which is then put back directly into the building for the benefit of students. Last year a large portion of this money went toward the installation of LCD projectors for many classrooms. There are many more classrooms still in need of this technology. Other examples of the use of this money include music and athletic supplies/equipment, assistive technologies, recess equipment, field trip support, club support, and classroom materials. This is the only school wide fundraiser that we do. We appreciate your support.
8. What a GREAT START to the school year!! Your positive attitudes are reflected in your student's smiles, laughter, respect, effort and multiple examples of kindness. I hope all of you have an excellent weekend.

Dear 8th Grade Rotolo Parents:
While changes in previously assigned dates always cause other conflicts, we did find it necessary to move the date of the previously assigned 8th grade curriculum night, as you were notified last week. In order to accommodate conflicts, we have moved the start time on Monday, September 24th to 7:30PM, with an ending time of 9PM. I apologize for the inconveniences this may cause. Hopefully, this 1/2 hour delay with helps those who have earlier conflicts. Thank you for your understanding. See you at curriculum night!
Sincerely,
Steve Maciejewski

Good morning! Below are some points of information that you will find important...
1) There have been some changes to the ending dates of each of our three trimesters. This occurred in order to balance the number of days in each trimester. These changes do not affect the calendar in any way as far as student attendance. The new ending date for first trimester is Friday, November 16th, 2007. The new ending date for the second trimester is Thursday, February 28th, 2008. The ending date for the third trimester is Friday, June 6th, 2008.
2) The curriculum nights are fast approaching. 6th grade curriculum night is Monday, September 10th from 7PM-8:30PM. Meet in the main gym, and then you will proceed to the sixth grade wing after a presentation. 7th grade curriculum night is Tuesday, September 18th from 7PM-8:30PM. Also begin in the main gym...PLEASE NOTE -The 8th grade curriculum night has been changed - it is now Monday, September 24th. It also will be from 7PM-8:30PM, beginning in the main gym. The previous date, 9/13, was changed due to the religious holiday Rosh Hashanah. Please note that curriculum night is not a student attended event.
3) The RMS magazine fundraising sale begins with student assemblies tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 6th. This is the only fundraiser RMS will participate in as an entire school each year. RMS receives 40% of each magazine subscription ordered thru student sales. Money from this fundraiser is used for athletics, and recently allowed for the purchase of ceiling mounted projectors in classrooms in the building. Students receive prizes for sales achievements. Please ask to see the packet they receive tomorrow.
4) You have the ability to sign up for school district generated email thru the BPS 'Messenger' system. Please go to www.bps101.net ( http://www.bps101.net/ ), go to Tools, then go to Messenger, and walk thru the steps to register for district email. As you go thru the steps, you will see that you can indicate preferences for related information, such as athletics or grade level. Later this school year, we will be using the Messenger system for parent communication instead of our own in-school email database. You can get a jump start on viewing district parent email by signing up now for Messenger.
