RMS March Madness Reading Challenge
During the months of March and April, RMS students participated in a March Madness Reading Challenge. At the end of each week students filled out a Google form indicating how many minutes they read during the week. With some help from BPS101 Instructional Technologist Jenny Duffy, the RMS Reading Culture PLC (Kelly Cook and Cara Schuster) was able to consolidate all of the reading minutes from all of the students in the school through google forms and sheets.
► The total amount of minutes read by all RMS students during competition: 890,061 minutes or 14,834 hours!
The students were very motivated and thanks to the support of ELA teachers there was a rise in competition and in the reading minutes. The two teams which came out on top with the most minutes read were Team 7-2 led by ELA Teacher Cassie Castro and Team 7-1 led by Becky Cain.
The competition ended with a basketball free throw competition with these top two teams. The top reader of each team (Kim Adams on 7-1 and Cami Mayo on 7-2) selected two students to make the basketball throws. 7-2 made the most throws and the team participated in a raffle of prizes from Barnes and Noble, Red Box, and the Scholastic Book Fair.
New to the March Madness competition this year was the competition between the two ELA teachers of the winning teams. Mrs. Castro made one throw and won one book. Team 7-2 teachers also participated in “making baskets for books” and unfortunately walked away without books. However, the students were very entertained by the attempt.
