RMS Special Messenger for July 21, 2022

Hello RMS Families-

Warning, this is a long one! We will begin regular Messengers again soon, but we have info to share, and you have been contacting us with questions. So, here is our special message:

Today we are announcing Tara Piatek as the new Principal of Sam Rotolo Middle School. Mrs. Piatek is well known to the school community, as she has served as a dean and assistant principal at Batavia High School for the past 6 years. She is replacing Dr. Kelley Karnick, who recently announced to staff that she would not return to RMS in the fall.

Mrs. Piatek’s message to the RMS Community:

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with the Rotolo community and am eager to learn all of the amazing things that the students and staff at Rotolo will share. I treasure each leadership role that has led me to this moment and am excited to see what the future holds for all of us at RMS.  While it is very difficult to leave the people I have worked with at BHS, I know the connections I made there have prepared me for this role. I can’t wait to meet everyone and get this year moving!”

Piatek majored in Speech Communications and Secondary Education at Augustana College and completed Master’s Degrees in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership through Olivet Nazarene University.  She started her journey into education as a high school English/Speech Communications teacher in Oswego, Il.  She currently lives with her husband in Addison. Principal Piatek has been in education for 14 years in multiple roles. Before becoming Assistant Principal at BHS, Tara served as a middle school dean in a neighboring district, dean of Batavia High School, and assistant principal at Batavia High School.

Locker Move-In Day and Picture Day

On Tuesday, August 9th, RMS students and parents will be able to come to school anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. for the following:

  • Locate locker assignment and practice combination

  • Purchase physical education uniforms if needed

  • Locate their classrooms throughout the building from their schedule

  • Have school picture taken (see blurb below)

Picture Day

School Pictures will be taken in the East Gym from 9:00 -6:00 during Registration Day on August 9th. All students will have their pictures taken for the yearbook and IDs. Photos can be ordered online through Jostens, we no longer send out order forms.  For those unable to come to RMS on August 9th, the picture make-up day is scheduled for September 21st during the school day.

6th Grade Students and Families

Thank you for completing the Welcome to RMS Event participation form to let us know if your child will attend on Wednesday, August 10th, 2022, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. So far, it looks as if almost 80% of our 6th-grade class will be with us that morning. If you have not completed the form but your child still wants to participate, please complete the participation form

Once again, for those eligible for school bus transportation, our buses will run all routes that morning to and from the event. Once the PowerSchool portal opens at the beginning of August, students can view their schedules and get information about their bus route (number, pickup, and drop-off locations and times). For planning purposes, you can plan that the pickup time listed in PowerSchool will be exactly one hour later, on August 10th. The drop-off time will be approximately four hours earlier than the time listed in PowerSchool for a regular school day.

For example, if the pickup time listed in PowerSchool is 7:38 a.m. and the drop-off time is 3:24 p.m, you should plan that the August 10th pickup time will be 8:38 a.m., and the drop-off time will be approximately 11:24 a.m. Since only 6th-grade students will be riding the bus on this day, the routes may go a bit quicker, so please plan accordingly and ensure students are at the bus stop 10 minutes early.

Other students who would typically walk, ride their bikes, or get dropped off will do that as they would on a regular school day. The RMS doors will open at 8:45 that morning for students who are being dropped off, walking, or riding their bikes. Students should plan on having access to their schedule (either a printed copy or one accessible on their phone) that morning. We will have schedules available for students who do not bring theirs. Students will not need any other materials or supplies on that day.

Students will experience arrival and dismissal procedures and get a tour of the building, emphasizing the classrooms they will need to get to and from during the first semester of school. In addition, students will see how PE and lunch work at RMS and get their questions about middle school answered.

Our annual ‘registration and locker move-in day’ will be held the previous day (August 9th) for all students from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. On that day, students will get their fall school picture taken, they will be able to walk their schedule, pay any unpaid student fees, and get questions answered by staff members.

We hope this experience will allow our newest RMS students to feel more comfortable as we head into the new school year! We hope you have a great summer and can’t wait to meet our new 6th graders in August!
